Can you tell us about how this club got started? The group got started in the late 1960’s shortly after the college opened its doors. The group has been known by several names in the past including Student Senate, KAPS, Student Leadership Council and most recently, Activities Council.
What is the purpose of the club? The group is an extension of the Student Life office on campus and the group who helps plan and promote many of the various activities and events held across campus.
When and where do you meet? The group meets on Wednesdays in Iowa Hall.
What do meetings consist of? Meetings change depending on the time of the year. While the focus is to plan and promote upcoming events and activities, the group also helps to support various other projects each year including Kirkwood’s Annual Awards Banquet, the nomination and voting process for the Honorary Student Award, and other things that come up throughout the year.
What are some benefits of joining? Student joining any club at Kirkwood can benefit from meeting new friends, building their resume and enjoying various opportunities to enhance their college experience outside the classroom. Specific to Activities Council, it’s a fun group for any student interested in being an event planner, or any students with an interest in helping others get the most out of their college experience.
How can students join? Interested students can email student.life@kirkwood.edu with any questions about how to join.
Who is part of the leadership? The group changes what the leadership positions look like each year. Currently, this year’s group voted to not have individual student leaders and run the group as a team. The advisors for the group are Seth Vander Tuig, Emily Grace and Erik Ryan from Student Life.
How long has the club been around? Since the late 1960’s, shortly after the college open its doors.
Do you have plans for any upcoming events such as bake sales? All of the events planned by this group can be found at www.kirkwood.edu/events.
Is there anything you would like to add? Some students really enjoy planning and promoting events and this is a great group for those students. Others simply enjoy attending events. Students don’t need to be part of this group to enjoy the events and all students are welcome to attend more than 400 free events held each year.
