Green starts with you

Spring semester is winding down, which means summer and all things green will start to flourish. People may forget about the importance of keeping the Earth healthy, and instead, focus on the nice weather. To help maintain a clean environment, there are several steps students and the community can take to contribute to this cause.

One of the biggest ways to help the planet is by conserving energy. By being mindful of our electricity usage, it is easy to reduce environmental footprints. Turning off the lights when not in use, unplugging electronics and choosing appliances that are energy-efficient are many ways to conserve energy.

Conserving water is also another way to keep the environment in good shape. According to the American Leak Detection, 95 percent of water used by Americans in their homes is wasted. To prevent this, simply work on reducing your shower time and not leaving water running while brushing your teeth. Purchasing gallons of re-fillable water will also help reduce the cost of water bills and money spent on in-home repairs.

Drinking water is an essential to humans. By using re-usable water bottles instead of purchasing small bottles at vending machines reduces the footprint. Additionally, there are also many water fountains with filling stations available in public buildings. This is another way to reduce plastic use and overall assist to a greener planet.

Additional ways to help the planet include shopping locally or second-hand. Supporting local businesses is not only beneficial for the economy but also for the environment. By buying locally grown products, the carbon footprint can be reduced, which overall keeps the Earth healthy. Local grown produce also means fresher and healthier options while supporting farmers and local food producers.

Another part of the big picture is keeping our surroundings and campus buildings clean. By picking up trash on the ground and recycling bottles and cans, it helps to make a big difference. Also, taking action by picking up trash on the beach, parks or trails, helps to save wildlife. Who doesn’t want to save the sea turtles?

There are also community clean-up events, such as the KSA Adopt-A-Highway event featured on this issue’s front page, which anyone can participate in.

By implementing these steps into everyday life, it makes a big difference. Anyone can recycle or save electricity and it all starts with you. It will benefit to the Earth being a safer, greener and overall happier place for humans and wildlife. What will you do to help the cause?
