Midwest summer travel guide

If you’re looking for fun things to do this summer, look no further. There are plenty of Midwest travel hot spots including affordable and even free day trips or destinations for a weekend road trip.  

If you don’t want to travel too far, Iowa has plenty of popular travel destinations. Some of these include visiting the state capitol in Des Moines, where the Blank Park Zoo is located. The Zoo can be enjoyed at any age. 

It is open daily, with the admission fee of $20 for adults. Other Des Moines locations include visiting the Des Moines Botanical Garden, which includes beautiful plants and an educational experience. Admission for adults is $12 and is free for members. 

If you’re looking for more excitement and adventure, the Villisca Axe Murder House located in Villisca, is a must-see, thrilling destination. Although the drive is just over three hours from Cedar Rapids, it is a popular place for riveting tourism. The price for a tour is $15 for 45 minutes, or, you can daringly stay overnight with others for additional costs.  

Illinois has several landmarks and enjoyable trips as well. Chicago has the famous Millennial Park which includes “The Bean” as well as Wrigley Field, the Field Museum, Lincoln Park Zoo and the Museum of Science and Industry. These destinations range from free to $40.   

Missouri includes a wide selection of destinations from St. Louis to Kansas City. St. Louis is one of the most popular destinations in the state with its iconic Gateway Arch. The museum is free to the public and to enter inside the arch, the tram ride ranges from $15 to $19. 

In Kansas City, the National WWI Museum and Memorial is a must-see for history fans. Admission is $18 for adults. If you’re more for the outdoors, the Ozarks provide opportunities for visitors including hiking, kayaking, fishing, and scenic views.   

If you’re looking to head north, traveling to Wisconsin offers many scenery and tourist destinations. Wisconsin’s landscapes are popular from Lake Michigan to the Driftless Area. Cities like Milwaukee and Madison are also popular travel sites with historic architecture and food.  

Whether it is a day trip, a weekend getaway, or a long summer vacation, the Midwest is a great place to explore. So, if you’re looking for affordable and fun options to indulge in this summer, choose the Midwest.
