International Education Week is Nov. 18 – 22, so what better time to let you know about the international resources provided by the Sundberg Library here at Kirkwood?
The library has more than 100 country specific books in the Culture Smart customs and culture series.
We also have books of fiction and nonfiction representing countries around the world. A few of our newest titles are “Thirteen Months of Sunrise”, short stories by Sudanese author Rāniyā Maʼmūn, translated by Elisabeth Jaquette; “Egyptian Made: Women, Work, and the Promise of Liberation”, by Leslie T. Chang; and “My Sweet Orange Tree: The Story of a Little Boy Who Discovered Pain”, a Brazilian children’s classic by José Mauro de Vasconcelos, translated by Alison Entrekin.
Do you like to travel? We recently added several books on mindful travel to our collection. Two of those titles are “The Ethical Traveller: 100 Ways to Roam the World (Without Ruining It)”; and “Beyond Guilt Trips: Mindful Travel in an Unequal World”.
The library subscribes to almost 90 databases on different topics that you can search for classwork or any topic of interest.
Two that are dedicated to providing country-specific information are Global Road Warrior and A to Z World Food – each covering about 175 countries. Global Road Warrior contains information on government, history, language, education, holidays and more. In A to Z World Food you will find traditional recipes in all course categories: appetizers, soups, salads, etc. It also includes information on national and regional cuisine, daily meals, dining etiquette, and special occasion foods.
Other sources for finding international information are: Academic Search Elite, for magazine and scholarly journal articles on academic topics; Business Source Elite for articles from magazine, journal and professional publications, covering business, economics, management, and marketing; and New York Times for national and international coverage of World, Politics, Business, Technology and more.
In November, the library set up our first display to coincide with Global Learning’s Global Spotlight country. November’s spotlight is Sudan. Students can stop in and see what books and information are on display.
Next semester two of the countries that will be in the spotlight are Azerbaijan and Dominican Republic. If you know of any great books that represent either of these countries please recommend them to us.
