Home of Continuing Education relocates

Kirkwood Community College is expanding its campus again, this time with the Continuing Education program.

According to Vice President of Finance Casey Dunning, at the end of March, Kirkwood will acquire the building located at the corner of C Street and 76th Avenue on the eastern edge of campus.

The decision was finalized at the Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, Feb. 13, and it will cost the college $5,250,000.

“We’ll be working on really programming the building over the course of that next year once we get into the building and really start diving into it,” said Dunning. “But the plan is to move the vast majority of Continuing Ed operations over there as part of this purchase.

“We close on March 31 and right after we get done with that, we’re going to be moving in some residents pretty quickly.”

Dunning said the plan is to start moving staff into the office spaces in the months following the purchase. “It’s move-in ready, it’s got furniture, it’s got all that stuff already in it, so we should be able to hit the ground running with getting some folks over there pretty quickly,” he said.

Dunning said the new building will help people using the Continuing Education services by providing one singular space that will have most of if not all the non-credit course offerings.

He said he also hopes to make it easier for those students to transition to the main campus to take credited courses.

Troy McQuillen, vice president of Facilities, said, “We are still studying what stays and what moves from the existing Continuing Education building. There are several other departments and entities around the campus looking for additional space.  The KLIFE building could be an option for some of those requests.”

“Like many of our buildings, we are planning to have spaces for students to study, network and collaborate,” he added.  “This includes access to technology, charging stations and lounges.”

McQuillen said he doesn’t believe students will be moved into the new spaces until after July 1, 2026.
