Midterm Marathon: Puppies, popcorn and prizes

“I’m glad it lasts all day, unlike other Kirkwood events, so everyone has an opportunity to partake.”

The Sundberg Library in Benton Hall and Learning Commons in Cedar Hall will host Midterm Marathon from March 3-7, one week before midterms. The event offers a place and time for students to study and get academic support, as well as engage in fun activities.

Along with academic and library support, Midterm Marathon will have jigsaw puzzles and other activities for students to work on in between study sessions. “It’s extra academic help but we also want it to be fun, so it will have some games, snacks and stress relief,” said Julie Peterson, Kirkwood librarian.

In both the Library and the Learning Commons, there will be daily entries for prize drawing and coloring pages to help with relaxation. Additionally, each day will have something unique to that day. Students can come to the library on Monday to interact with dogs, on Tuesday there will be doughnuts as long as they last, on Wednesday there will be popcorn available and on Thursday there will be chair massage available around activity hour. Throughout the week there will be games, puzzles, snacks, a scavenger hunt and door prizes.

Peterson said Midterm Marathon’s older counterpart, Exam Cram, was a similar event to this one except it focused on helping students prepare for finals, the week before finals.

“However, after 10 years, the library staff thought it would be a better idea to host the event before midterms. Peterson stated, “It will be more helpful because students are currently working on their papers and research rather than at the end of the semester when they’re almost done with everything.”

Brianna Panosh, education administration student, said she remembers going to the event last year. “I’m glad it lasts all day, unlike other Kirkwood events, so everyone has an opportunity to partake.”

Nautyca Heideoberg, nursing major, agreed. “Overall, it’s just a good resource for students. That’s pretty good for everybody if they know where to go for that.”
