Scholarship tips and tricks

Students are invited to the Scholarship Application Tips and Tricks event on Thursday, Feb. 16, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Multicultural Lounge (Iowa Hall 2028). Students can get assistance in filling out the scholarship application, revising their personal summary or getting general scholarship questions answered before the first round deadline of March 15. 

Visiting glass artist

Visiting glass artist Addi Ginsberg will be on campus Feb. 10, for a lecture in 234 Cedar Hall from 5 – 6 p.m. Attendees can then go to the Art & Theatre Annex Kiln Building for a live glass demonstration from 7 – 9 p.m.

Tuesday Tune-Ups

Kirkwood counselors will be offering personal growth and improvement sessions to students, staff and faculty on Tuesdays throughout the semester during Activity Hour, from 11:15 a.m. – 12:10 p.m. in 3042 Iowa Hall. Upcoming sessions include Feb. 14 – What Makes Relationships Work?; Feb. 21 – Move Through College Mindfully; Feb. 28 – Confidence and Self-Esteem.

Green Bandana

Help spread awareness of resources available for those with mental health-related needs. 

Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the Green Bandana Project on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 11:15 a.m. – 12:10 p.m. (2057 Cedar Hall). 

The program promotes a stigma-free and supportive environment. 

Student awards banquet

Kirkwood’s Annual Awards Banquet is an opportunity to recognize the top student leaders, student athletes, those in our performing arts, clubs and organizations, advisors and others. 

The nomination form and list of previous awards can be found at www.kirkwood.edu/banquet. Students are encouraged to make  nominations before the deadline on Monday, March 20.

Free roller skating 

Head over to Super Skate for free roller skating on Sunday, Feb. 12, from 1-4 p.m. Students can scan in at the event using the event check-in QR code located in their MyHub app. Super Skate is located at 5100 Northland Ave NE, Cedar Rapids.

Free movie night

Students are invited to 234 Cedar Hall to watch “The Notebook” on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. Pizza will be provided to the first 75 students as well as hot and freshly popped popcorn, movie theater candy and pop while watching the movie. 

Free bowling

Head over to May City Bowl for free bowling on Tuesday, Feb. 14 and Feb. 21 from 3 – 5 p.m. Students can scan in at the event using the event check-in QR code located in their MyHub app. May City Bowl is located at 1648 Trent St SW, Cedar Rapids.

Free go-kart racing

Students can go to Speedeez Indoor Go-Karts on Monday, Feb. 20, from 3 – 5 p.m. for free go-kart racing. Students can scan in at the event using the event check-in QR code located in their MyHub app. Speedeez Indoor Go-Karts is located at 1120 33rd Ave SW, Cedar Rapids.

Bingo in Iowa Hall

Visit the first floor stage in Iowa Hall on Thursday, Feb. 23, to play bingo and a chance to win some prizes.

Students can scan in at the event using the event check-in QR code located in their MyHub app for the chance to win even more prizes.

Jazz concerts

Kirkwood will be hosting a Vocal Jazz Festival on Friday, Feb. 24, for attendees interested in vocal jazz including high school and college students. 

The festival will feature Lake Effect, from University of Minnesota-Duluth. Adjudicators Ian Brekke, Janice Vlachos and Ryan Deignan will be joining us. The festival will take place all day with a performance for all audience attendees at 7:30 p.m.

Family work station in the library

Library Services recently purchased and installed a family-friendly workstation on the first floor of the Library. It is half study carrel, half playpen, for students who are also parents and need to use the library while caring for a young child. 

Media students win eight awards

Kirkwood Student Media won eight awards at the annual Iowa College Media Association convention. 

Each year students compete against both community colleges and four-year institutions throughout the state. This year contest entries were judged by industry professionals in North Carolina. The awards include:

Kirkwood Student Productions – 1st place – Best Variety-Music and Comedy Video Program; Honorable Mention – Best Short Video Documentary. 

Communiqué – 1st place – Best Print Newspaper Front Page; 1st place – Best Print News Photo; Second Place – Best Headline Writing; Honorable Mention – Best Feature Reporting; Honorable Mention – Best Special Section; Honorable Mention – Best Staff Editorial.
