Where are you from? Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Why did you choose Kirkwood? I decided to become a student at Kirkwood because its highly regarded and successful firefighting program. The expanding campus and student life, rich with growth and opportunities also drew my attention towards the college.
What is your major and how did you choose it? My major is Fire Science Technology. I found my interest in firefighting after my service in the United States military and observed how the skills I had learned translated well into becoming a first responder. I have a strong connection to the community I grew up and currently live in and I am passionate about helping others.
What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? My proudest moment at Kirkwood so far has been completing the Emergency Medical Technician program and subsequently passing the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
What are your plans after Kirkwood? After Kirkwood I hope to become a firefighter on a career department.
What inspires or motivates you? I am inspired and motivated by a variety of factors. My desire to learn and expand my knowledge about the things that interest me continue to drive me further into new concepts and opportunities. Making a positive impact on my future career as a firefighter has also been a critical motivating factor. The support of my family and friends also gives me the strength and encouragement to push forward and finish what I have started.
Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood. Outside of Kirkwood I love to spend time with my family and friends. A variety of outdoor recreational activities continue to a be some of the most enjoyable and memorable moments in my life such as hunting with friends and playing sports.
What does be named an Outstanding Student mean to you? Being named Outstanding Student has been an incredible honor. It signifies the hard work, dedication, and accomplishments have been recognized and celebrated by Kirkwood. Not only does it inspire other students to push further to reach their full potential, it also opens the doors to many more opportunities. Those opportunities can be scholarships, internships, job offers and much more because it demonstrates the student’s skills, achievements, and work ethic.
Is there anything else you’d like to add? Since becoming a student in 2019 to now, I absolutely commend the excellent education I have received at Kirkwood at it would not have been possible without the phenomenal professors and instructors I have had throughout the years.
