Outstanding Students

Mawadda Meelad

Where are you from? I’m originally from Libya and I have been living in Coralville, Iowa, since 2019.

Why did you choose Kirkwood? I choose Kirkwood because it is known for its affordability, quality of education and student support services. It has a diverse student body and a welcoming campus environment. Also, Kirkwood College is the ease with which I can transfer my credits and continue my education. In addition, Kirkwood has a variety of resources available to help students with the transfer process, such as transfer guides, advising services and transfer events.

What is your major and how did you choose it? My major is financial services and I decided to study finance because I have always been interested in understanding how money and investments work. I find the world of finance fascinating and I want to learn more about how financial systems and markets operate. Additionally, I believe that studying finance will provide me with valuable skills and knowledge that will be useful in my future career.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? I have had two incredibly proud moments during my time at Kirkwood. The first was at the beginning of this semester when I was hired as a tutor. it was an honor to be selected for this role and to have the opportunity to support my fellow students in their academic pursuits.

The second proud moment was when I received an invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). This was a tremendous honor for me, and it was a reflection of the hard work and dedication that I have put into my studies at Kirkwood. Being invited to join PTK is a testament to my academic achievements and a recognition of the effort I have put in to excel in my coursework.

What are your plans after Kirkwood? I’ve been thinking about transferring to the University of Iowa to study accounting.

What inspires or motivates you? My husband has been a great source of motivation for me. His unwavering support and encouragement have inspired me to work towards my goals with greater determination and passion.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood. One of the things I really enjoy is spending time with my family. I love going on walks together, exploring nature and just enjoying each other’s company. I also really enjoy reading books with my kids, as it’s a great way for us to bond and learn together. I am also passionate about personal development. I love watching videos and reading articles that inspire me to become a better person, both personally and professionally.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? Being named an Outstanding Student is a great honor and a significant achievement to me.  Also, a challenge for me to keep pushing myself to reach new heights and contribute to the betterment of society.

Is there anything else you’d like to add? Just to emphasize, I truly believe that being selected as an Outstanding Student is not only a testament to my own hard work and dedication but also to the exceptional education and opportunities that Kirkwood College has to offer. I feel grateful to have had access to such a high-quality education.
