Outstanding Students

Rayna Brandenburg

Where are you from? Springville, Iowa

Why did you choose Kirkwood? As a high school student, I learned of Kirkwood Community College through the dual enrollment program. Through this program, I have discovered the vast opportunities related to career exploration, class offerings, affordable education, and transferable skills.

What is your major and how did you choose it? Despite being in high school, I will graduate from Kirkwood Community College with an Associate of Arts and Associate of Science, one week before my high school graduation. These majors will not only assist in fulfilling general education requirements, but also give me a firm foundation in which to build a greater understanding of the world around me.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? My proudest moment at Kirkwood has been succeeding in the small steps. These steps can range from completing a rigorous exam or essay to an entire academic course. Furthermore, I feel pride knowing that success in each of these small steps will bring me one step closer to accomplishing future goals and reaching my full potential.

What are your plans after Kirkwood? After Kirkwood, I hope to attend college and further my education in healthcare. At this time, I have been accepted into the diagnostic medical sonography program at Allen College. Moreover, I plan to enter the workforce as a certified nursing assistant after graduating high school to further prepare myself for the field of healthcare.

What inspires or motivates you? My greatest aspiration is to make a difference in the lives of others. In my life, I have learned that enduring throughchallenges and helping others through theirs is an important aspect of life. Knowing this has greatly assisted me in becoming successful in my academic career.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood. Outside of Kirkwood and high school, I spend a great deal of time working on my family homestead. It is here that I have learned many influential life lessons and built a closer connection with my family members.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? I am very grateful for being nominated and selected as an Outstanding Student. Being named as an Outstanding Student shows me that I am moving closer to reaching my goals through my hard work and dedication.

Is there anything else you’d like to add? I would like to thank all of the faculty who have provided such accessible educational opportunities. Moreover, I am forever grateful to my family, who has supported and encouraged me.
