Kirkwood Community College’s library is being renamed the Sundberg Library and Learning Commons.
According to Executive Director of the Kirkwood Foundation Jody Pellerin, the library is being named for Kirkwood President Dr. Lori Sundberg and her husband, Rick, in recognition of their generous fi nancial support to the Kirkwood Foundation to provide scholarships for students.
Sundberg will retire in October and on behalf of her recognition and dedication to the library, Sundberg stated, “I wanted to be able to leave something of my presidency after I was gone. I’m the fi rst woman president so that was important to me.”
She added how her time as a student was often spent at the library studying, so she wanted to “show students that the library is an important part of the college.”
In reflecting on her time at the college, Sundberg said her biggest accomplishment as president has been “getting through the pandemic and keeping the institution financially strong during that time, and figuring out how to support students.”
Since the library opened in 1967 it has gone through several name changes. It is designed to support students, staff, and faculty with a variety of resources including rooms that can be reserved for private study times.
The college will host a dedication ceremony at the library to honor Sundberg on Oct. 5
