The new Anatomy and Physiology Student Success Center (APSSC) is now open to students. The center is available for most students, but it’s primarily a studying environment for students in the Anatomy and Physiology field.
According to Lab Operation Coordinator April Bohnenkamp, “This is a space for students studying on their own, but if they need the extra help, we’re here… The center is to provide study support to students in our A&P classes. There’s tons of duplications of supplies they would see in the lab…This is a space where they can come outside of their original class time and have a time to work with those materials and supplies again. There are learning assistants around to answer questions they have, so really it’s a lab outside of lab.”
Not only is the center equipped with models and microscopes, it also has a virtual cadaver system called an anatomage table, which is the shining star of the center. The anatomage table gives students a better understanding and more accurate visuals of the human body. They are allowed to have a closer look of the model and even compare a healthy model to a model that has suffered a health concern such as a heart attack.
Bohnenkamp said, “The 3D and the hands-on part of the face-to-face labs that we love so much, students still have access when they’re here to go over to our cadaver space. We’re able to provide more hours for that study support. We’re not interrupted by classes needing to come in or anything like that, so we’re able to provide more since we’re not limited by the lab schedule.”
Bohnenkamp said she and the technology center are also teaming up to work on an open Zoom for the center in case students are unable to come in physically and students to sign in online rather than pen and paper.
Bohnenkamp said she hopes to connect the anatomage with Zoom so students are able to use the cadaver via Zoom as well.
“I think study time and a dedicated space for that studying is really important,” said Bohnenkamp. She added that having a staff member ready to answer questions and walk student through challenges is really helpful.
“It is a huge boost for student success,” said Bohnenkamp. She added, having a dedicated space where students know the materials they need are there, providing staff who can answer questions and providing a quiet environment in a lab setting will all assist in student success.
The APSSC is located in 1132 Linn Hall and is open throughout the week. Bohnenkamp said there’s no need to schedule an appointment. Regardless if students need to study for an exam, a quiet place to work on assignments or need extra help to understand the subject, the APSSC is available
