Adding a student government will open doors

A club that Kirkwood does not have is student government. Politics and government are versatile around the world. From presidential elections to laws and rights, it is an important factor in the United States.

Adding this club to the college’s wide repertoire of clubs may help students be more involved and educated, as well as improve professional skills.

Students who are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university and study Political Science have very few options for their field in involvement at Kirkwood. The Kirkwood Democratic Club, led by Professor Blake Eliot, is one of the only clubs in this area of interest.

According to Eastern Nazarene College, student government is a way to help students feel empowered and develop useful skills to use in the future.

However, these are only a few of the many reasons that students planning on studying Political Science are benefited.

Another reason Kirkwood should have a student government includes the chance for more leadership and networking opportunities. Student government provides the opportunity to participate in professional environments and prepare them for experiences in the job force. This may include shadowing people that work in the political field at state capitols, and other county level jobs.

High schools are required to teach history courses and government, but that is only a portion of looking into government as a profession.

Allowing students to indulge themselves in culture and share ideas with others is one of many ways to improve student life. With an added student government, new ideas can also be introduced and proposed to the college in a professional manner.

Meetings that are conducted on government levels use the Parliamentary Procedure. Introducing students to this process is another way students are able to showcase their professional skills and use them in future jobs.

Altogether, student government will not only bring people together, it also allows for learning opportunities, leadership skills, and networking.

Students interested in this field should consider starting this club as it will benefit students in more than several ways now, and in the future.
