Spring Break traveling vs. staying home

Spring break for Kirkwood Community College is right around the corner from March 11 – 15. There is also a yearly debate about whether it is better to stay home or travel.

According to Gitnux Market Data, about 1.5 million U.S. college students travel for spring break where a total of $2.25 billion is spent each year.

The average college student spends approximately $1,080 on spring break vacations.

Some students can afford to travel but others cannot, leaving them to stay home and work during the week off from school. Vacationing for spring break can have many benefits but so can vacationing at home.

The number of spring break trips have continued to grow since the national plummet in 2020. Travel insurance company World Nomads reported that in 2023, 52% of Americans’ top destinations were European regions, 19% were South America and Asi and the other 29% were domestic.

In the U.S., New Orleans is set to be the top spring break destination of 2024, as well as one the most dangerous.

The Louisiana town saw 931,680 spring break-related searches from February to May 2023, according to AIrportParkingReservations.com. Other popular travel spots include Punta Cana, Las Vegas, Maui and Cabo San Lucas.

Although it may be nice to enjoy a vacation over break, it can also be good to remain close to home and take time for yourself.

Picking up extra shifts at a job during this free time can be beneficial and allow you to earn money instead of spending it while traveling. This free time also can be perfect for finally doing those things that have been put off. Maybe it’s time to finally clean the house or work on that essay for class.

However you spend your free time, more of it is not a bad thing considering how quickly time passes.

Kirkwood students and staff have been working hard this semester and are getting some well-deserved time off with spring break. Whether you’re traveling or staying home, remember to have fun and stay safe.
