The era of Covid and its effects have contributed to a new way of life today. Whether it is working from home, taking online classes or being more cautious, the virtual world has accelerated. But, does that mean we have to be connected all time?
As a result of the advancement in technology, some schools in the area, including Iowa City, now have online learning during snow days.
For those schools, a day off is less classroom time, but teachers are able to catch up on grading. Is pushing to have online Zoom class during snow days the better choice?
Kirkwood has not decided to require Zoom classes during snow days. Instead, many professors stick to their regular assignments and due dates allowing students to complete them during their day at home.
As for schools that have Zoom classes on snow days, the undisciplined majority of students would prefer the snow day off. Some people suggest making Zoom classes for optional or extra credit.
Strong discipline must be inherited among all students in order for this method to be effective. Educational institutions can make it mandatory for students to attend Zoom classes during snow days.
Kirkwood students are not required to attend class on snow days and Zoom classes have not been an option during said days.
Due to weather-related internet disruptions, unstable internet for students who live in rural areas and a variety of other reasons, Zoom classes are unpractical for Kirkwood students.
It would be correct to say that Zoom classes have become an option in place of snow days, but it is not the favorable choice.
