Q: Where are you from?
A: My name is Alecia Swift-Walker and I am currently from Vinton, Iowa.
Q: Why did you choose Kirkwood?
A: I am attending Kirkwood because I am alumni from Kirkwood. I completed the Floriculture Program in 1994-95. It is a great College!
Q: What is your major and how did you choose it?
A: I was replaced with technology after 16 years at Alliant Energy last February. As I saw this situation grow near, I decided that a new career was in my future. I have chosen to pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy. I love to help people and I consider myself a good caregiver. I want to make a difference in people’s lives during a time when they are most vulnerable and need skilled care to help them find a new normal for their lives so they can keep on living.
Q: What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?
A: My proudest moment was receiving a note congratulating me to the Kirkwood Community College Dean’s List.
Q: What inspires or motivates you?
A: Considering I had not had a college class since 1995, this boosted my morale. It motivated me that at age 41, I can do this!
Q: Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.
A: I have raised two sons. I have been able to fall back on my floral skills to have employment at a flower shop. I enjoy gardening, cooking, sharing with and teaching people about these things.
Q: What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you?
A: I am truly flattered to have been chosen for this honor as Outstanding Student. I am grateful for the support from all the wonderful people at the Kirkwood Distance Learning Center in Benton County, Vinton, Iowa.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
A: My many thanks go to them for their endless encouragement through my journey. They proctored my tests, listened to speeches, set up my web live classes, helped me learn some valuable computer skills and so much more. Kasey Keeling is my advisor. She has been on top of helping me plan this road of success I see for my future. There is no doubt that without them and all the professors I have had the pleasure of learning with, I would not have accomplished 67 credits!
My best to all the students at Kirkwood. Make learning an adventure even when it is a challenge and remember that there really is a purpose for all that you are required to learn.
