Outstanding Students

April Rieff

Where are you from? Fairfax, Iowa

Why did you choose Kirkwood? I knew that if I came to Kirkwood, I would be able to get done with school in just two years and pay a fraction of the cost, while still obtaining all the skills to get a job after I graduate. Additionally, I wanted to stay close to home.

What is your major and how did you choose it? I am majoring in Web Technologies. I have always been intrigued by how the internet works. This along with my eye for design and marketing made web development the perfect major for me. Kirkwood also has a great scholarship program. I was awarded the Last Dollar Scholarship for being a Web Technologies major, which paid for my tuition in full. This made my decision pretty easy to make.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? My proudest moment at Kirkwood actually happened before I attended as a college student. In high school, I took four Kirkwood classes through their dual enrollment program and finished top of my section in Composition 1 and 2. This program really helped me get a head start on my major after enrolling as a freshman.

What are your plans after Kirkwood? I will work remotely full-time as a Digital Marketing Operations Manager for a business in Austin, Texas. I will also continue to teach dance at a local dance studio and hope to open up a freelancing Web Design business.

What inspires or motivates you? My family inspires me. My mom and dad have always cheered me on and supported me throughout my educational journey. Making them proud means the world to me.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood. As I mentioned, I am a dance teacher. I love the kids I get to work with each week. I also enjoy going on hikes, reading and trying out new coffee shops around Cedar Rapids.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? Being named an Outstanding Student is an honor. It is very humbling to be rewarded for all the hard work I have put in during my time at Kirkwood.

Is there anything else you’d like to add? Thank you to my professors and friends I’ve met while at Kirkwood. You guys made it all worth the while.
