Outstanding Students

Cambridge Hathaway

Q: Where are you from? (city, state)

A:  I live in rural Washington County, Iowa.

Q: Why did you choose Kirkwood?

A:  I chose Kirkwood because of its proximity, affordability, and quality education.  But beyond all that, the most important factor that gave me confidence that Kirkwood was the right choice for me was the helpfulness and friendliness of everyone at Kirkwood who helped me through the decision and admission process.

Q: What is your major and how did you choose it?

A: My major is Architectural Technology.  I have had a peculiar fascination with blueprints and design since I was a kid.  Through helping my dad with his construction business as well as using CAD to help design a major renovation to my family’s home, I knew that a career in the architectural field was the direction I wanted to go.

Q: What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

A: Definitely it was winning the National Association of Home Builders Student Competition in Las Vegas.  When they announced Kirkwood’s team as First Place, it was such a great feeling that all our hard work and investment of many long hours had all paid off.  It was a fantastic experience!

Q: What are your plans after Kirkwood?

A: Right now the plan is to work with a local home builder as a draftsman and home designer.

Q: What inspires or motivates you?

A: I am inspired by the people around me.  My community, my friends, and most importantly my family are all what motivate me to pursue excellence and to create things I can give back in return.

Q: Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

A:  Well, my favorite thing to do outside of schoolwork is to simply hang out with my family (my parents and two sisters) and friends, maybe playing board games, or volleyball, or having a cookout.  I also love stories, and whether they’re in books, movies or video games, I try to experience them whenever I can.  Some other things I enjoy are music, skiing, learning interesting science facts, philosophy, building things, and playing with my dog, Blu.

Q: What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you?

A:  It simply is an honor.  I want only to do my best, and to be recognized like this goes beyond anything I would ever ask or imagine.  I am wholly grateful.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A:  I just want to express my gratitude to Almighty God for blessing me with my experience at Kirkwood.  It has been a thoroughly positive chapter in my life.
