Outstanding Students

DJ Lord

Where are you from? Washington, Iowa.

Why did you choose Kirkwood? I decided to dual enroll with Kirkwood in my sophomore year to hopefully achieve a head start on narrowing down my future plans. I am continuing with Kirkwood as it is extremely affordable, close to home, and is one of the highest rated community colleges in Iowa.

What is your major and how did you choose it? I am pursuing a degree in Computer Science and an Associate of Arts (AA) degree. My time with Kirkwood has allowed me to narrow down and select what career fits me the best.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? The proudest moments are a result of my time commitment with Kirkwood. I’ve had the honor to serve as a Kirkwood Student Ambassador at the Washington County Regional Center for two consecutive years and was also nominated as an Outstanding Student.

What are your plans after Kirkwood? I plan to transfer to the University of Northern Iowa to receive a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and potentially a degree in business to lay the foundation for my entrepreneurial spirit.

What inspires or motivates you? The ability to make a change or make a difference drives my ambitions. Seeing the results of my actions encourages me to continue doing things for the better, whether through optimization or through overall impact.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood. Aside from being a high school senior and above full-time college student, I also work part-time. Otherwise, I find myself pursuing to learn more in my interests of photography, traveling, and meteorology.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? This acts as a great honor and is a form of recognition, allowing me to see the results of my time commitment. Outstanding Students are recognized for their hard work and drive to pursue further education.

Is there anything else you’d like to add? Without my faith, family, friends, colleagues, teachers, professors, and others who helped guide me throughout my life, I would not be where I am today. There are not enough words for me to express my gratitude to those who have helped me thus far and continue to do so.
