Where are you from? I am originally from South Sudan, Juba, and live in Iowa City, Iowa.
Why did you choose Kirkwood? Because my journey started when I first started the ESL classes at Kirkwood. It’s very flexible with the schedule.
What is your major and how did you choose it? My major is human service. I chose this major because I’m an immigrant and would love to help immigrants in my community.
What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? The last semester was very challenging for me, but when I got through it, I got all A’s in three of my classes, and I was very proud of myself because I could pass my classes while being a mother of three.
What are your plans after Kirkwood? I plan to work as a human service major and maybe go back to school and get my master’s degree in human service.
What inspires or motivates you? My children are my number one motivation. My grandmother always told me a degree would put me in a better place.
Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood. I hang out with my children. I love spending time with my family and friends. My favorite hobby is cooking.
What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? It’s an excellent opportunity for me to be named an outstanding student. It reminds me of my success at Kirkwood and that I worked hard during my school year there.
Is there anything else you’d like to add? I will be the first person in my family to graduate from college, which is an honor. I’m very proud of myself for working so hard to get my degree because of being a mother and attending school. It’s not an easy journey, but it’s worth it. When I first started Kirkwood, I learned how to read and write English, and I was named an outstanding student. It’s a great reminder that I have done it already and that there is nothing in this world that I cannot do. I’m working hard and giving my all regarding schoolwork. It has always been my motivation to get through school.
