Outstanding Students

Dominique Fleming

Q: Where are you from? (city, state)

A: I am from Winterset, Iowa

Q: Why did you choose Kirkwood?

A: I choose Kirkwood because they have a reputation for an excellent nursing program in the State of Iowa.

Q: What is your major and how did you choose it?

A: I am in the nursing program at Kirkwood. I choose Kirkwood because it had the highest success rate for nursing and I knew it would provide me excellent opportunities.

Q: What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

A: My proudest moment at Kirkwood is when I had patient contact after one of my classes, and I knew every single drug they were on and understood how we were going to help.

Q: What are your plans after Kirkwood?

A: I plan to go get my Bachelor of Science of Nursing and be an ER nurse.

Q: What inspires or motivates you?

A: What motivates me is that I like to see other people feel better and to know that I was a part of their care team.

Q: Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

A: Outside of Kirkwood, I love to volunteer with the Lisbon-Mount Vernon Ambulance Service as an EMT.  This real patient interaction is what motivates me to keep focused on nursing. When I am not at the ambulance station, I like to go for walks, hike, and hang out with friends.

Q: What does be named an Outstanding Student mean to you?

A: I am very thankful to have received this Outstanding Student award especially as we adapt to the changing learning environment, which has kept all of us on our toes.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A: Honestly, I could not have made it this far without the support of my fellow nursing peers, friends, and family. This is a very challenging program, especially online, and as such, our support networks are that much more important.
