Where are you from?
I am from Springville, Iowa.
Why did you choose Kirkwood?
I chose to attend Kirkwood because it had the best opportunities for me at the time. I took several Kirkwood classes in high school which was a great opportunity for me to get a head start on college. When it came time for me to graduate high school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but Kirkwood helped me to take classes and gain more understanding of what my talents are and how I can use them in the future.
What is your major and how did you choose it?
My major is Business Administration Marketing Management. I chose it because I love working with people and finding new ways to appeal to people by create advertisements, campaigns, slogans, you name it. Through the program I have worked on different marketing campaigns trying to create commercials or figuring out what campaigns attract consumers to the product. These projects have been extremely beneficial to me, and I have enjoyed all of them.
What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?
My proudest moment at Kirkwood has been during my last year here. I decided to wait on a couple of the challenging classes for my major for the last year. When the time came, I was very nervous as those classes were the two math classes for the marketing major. Obviously, two math classes do not seem like very many but it has never been my strong suit. After taking those two classes I truly feel that I was able to use all the information I have learned through college to be successful in these classes. I was able to stay organized, work ahead, actively listen to my professor and so much more.
What are your plans after Kirkwood?
My plans for after graduation are to get a job within the marketing field. Some people would think that’s an obvious choice but I currently work as a shift supervisor at Starbucks and it’s a really good job. As much as I love working there, I want to pursue what I have learned through Kirkwood and work my way up in a company. There are some opportunities for me at a couple banks in town that I have connections with as a marketing representative assistant and then moving up to a representative myself.
What inspires or motivates you?
I believe the biggest inspiration in my life is my family, and I know everyone says that but each one of my family members has taught me something that has shaped me into the person I am today. They have taught me how to work hard and challenge myself to grow and help others along the way. I tend to get caught up in my work and forget about building relationships, but my parents have both taught me how to invest in other people’s lives and show them you care. These things have helped me be successful in not only my work life but my college career as well.
Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.
Outside of Kirkwood I mostly spend my time at work. I enjoy being busy and feeling that I’ve accomplished something each day, ultimately that means I’m working. On the off chance I’m not in school or at work I’m usually sleeping or spending time with family, friends or my cat, Bean.
What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you?
Being named Outstanding Student is a great accomplishment for me. I appreciate the recognition for all my hard work in the classes I’ve taken.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I greatly appreciate my teachers as well for helping me along the way. I couldn’t have done it without their help. I appreciate the opportunity to share about myself and am very grateful for the time I have spent as a student at Kirkwood.
