Where are you from? I am originally from Villisca, Iowa.
Why did you choose Kirkwood? I chose Kirkwood Community College thanks to the college representative that visited my high school. He informed me that Kirkwood was one of the few colleges in Iowa to offer schooling for veterinary technicians. He also told me that the Iowa Last Dollar Scholarship covered the veterinary technician program. When I learned more about the specifics of the Kirkwood program, I was further motivated to come because of the hands on classes offered.
What is your major and how did you choose it? I am in the Veterinary Technician program earning my A.A.S. degree here at Kirkwood. I chose this program/career field because of my love of animals. I grew up on a farm with lots of livestock, and I always enjoyed caring for the animals. I wanted to go into a career where I could interact with animals and help them to get better.
What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood? My proudest moment at Kirkwood was when I properly placed an IV catheter in an animal on the first try.
What are you plans after Kirkwood? After I graduate from Kirkwood, I plan on passing the State and National Veterinary Technician Boards to become a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT). Once I pass my boards, I plan on moving closer to home and working as a veterinary technician at a local clinic.
What inspires or motivates you? Classes can be difficult, but I am motivated to keep up the good work in my classes thanks to my friends and teachers. They are always cheering me on and helping me. I am also motivated because of my love for the animals, and because I really enjoy my classes.
Tell us who you are outside of Kirkwood. Outside of working towards becoming a veterinary technician, I have many hobbies. Some of these hobbies include: reading, embroidery, fishkeeping and taking care of my goats at home.
What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you? Being named an Outstanding Student means a lot to me. It is very rewarding to know that my hard work is being recognized.
