Outstanding Students

Sam Miller

Where are you from?

Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Why did you choose Kirkwood?

It was time for a career change and Kirkwood has excellent technical programs.

What is your major and how did you choose it?

I chose Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics Technologies because it’s both something that has always fascinated me and is something that looks to have good job security in a world of increasing automation.

What has been your proudest moment at Kirkwood?

Getting to demonstrate the robots to tours of kids.

What are your plans after Kirkwood?

I plan to go into industry.

What inspires or motivates you?

This one is really hard. It’d be easy to just say “money”, but that sounds really mercenary and isn’t the whole story. I want to make the tools that other people can use to make the world a better place.

Tell us about who you are outside of Kirkwood – hobbies, family, other interests, etc.

I enjoy reading. I also do cooking and love experimenting with new combinations of flavors. Recently I started a writing project, an interactive fiction, that I am using to playtest an expansion I am writing for an RPG.

What does being named an Outstanding Student mean to you?

It came as a surprise. I do not feel like I have done anything to stand out from my peers.
