Eagles place 7th at Nationals

While November has come to a close, it means that the volleyball postseason is over and with that the Kirkwood Community College Eagles volleyball team placed 5th at nationals.

Going into the year the Eagles brought in a new coach and with that the regular season was very up and down oftentimes with higher ups than lower downs but ended up securing an astounding 30-8 record, being one of the best records in recent history for the college.

The amazing regular season would send Kirkwood into regionals as the second seed where they played Southeastern and won 3-0 at home. Next, they would play Iowa Central who were the eventual champions of the region in the second round sending the Eagles to wait for the selection show and hope for an at-large bid.

The Eagles would eventually get the bid and go into nationals as the 7 seed where they would play familiar opponent Heartland Community. Kirkwood ended up beating them earlier in the year 3-0 at the Kirkwood Invitational and eventually moved on to beat them 3-0 again in the national tournament 25-18, 25,18 and 25,17.

After the win against Heartland the Eagles would go on to try and take down the undefeated Scottsdale in the second round where they lost 3-1 in a very competitive game.

Right out the gates, Scottsdale would lead the entire set and be up as much as 8 points but the Eagles kept battling back and stole the first set in extras with a final score of 27-25.

The second set was just all Scottsdale with a score of 25-18 and then the third set went into extras again except Scottsdale took it 26-24 before winning the fourth and final set 25-21. This sent the Eagles into the consolation round to face up against Richard Bland.

In the game against Richard Bland, Kirkwood also took the first set 25-23 before the next two sets not being close losing 25-15 and 25-17 and then losing the third and final set of the match 25-23.

Although a disappointing end, the Eagle’s final season record was a solid 32-10, placing 7th in nationals on the year.
